Kinematics
Kinematics is the study of suspension geometry and movement that doesn’t consider any of the forces that caused the movement. It’s important to appreciate that you can’t adequately compensate for poor kinematics with spring, damper or ARB settings.
We can measure the chassis/suspension and use a computer programme to identify the effect of body movements such as pitch, roll and heave on the kinematics. We can use this data to understand important aspects such as roll centres, instant centres, pitch centres and wheel geometry changes throughout the range of suspension movement.
By analysing the kinematics we gain an understanding of the forces fed in to the
suspension caused by car body movements in acceleration, braking and cornering. We
need this understanding to determine things like suspension pick-
