Damper information

Dampers are vitally important to the handling of the car and must be correctly set and well maintained.

People are often surprised how much top end dampers cost it’s absolutely essential to discuss your requirements and budget with a specialist before you buy anything. We have seen people buy budget dampers and be delighted and also people spend a lot and be disappointed. At Cornering Force we sell all makes and have no vested interest in selling one brand over another.

The basic function of the damper is to damp oscillations caused by energy stored in the springs. However they do much more than that...

Low Speed

Confusingly, nothing to do with the speed of the car but refers to the speed the damper shaft moves. Low speed damping controls the car body movement (“sprung mass”) as it pitches with braking and rolls with cornering.

Low speed damping is important as it can be used to vary the rate of weight transfer around the car in pitch and roll. Low speed damping affects;

High Speed

High speed damping controls the wheel/hub assembly movement (“unsprung mass”) and deals with track irregularities. At the top end it deals with kerbs.

High speed damping is important in minimising tyre contact patch load variations at the wheel moves up and down over these irregularities.

At Cornering Force, we can calculate suitable low and high speed damping rates. We can dyno test to check rates/adjust or revalve to get dampers into a suitable range to allow fine tuning at the track.
